Expert dialogue: governing system-level transformations in the age of climate change
Major systems changes are needed to respond to environmental challenges and development needs. But how can we facilitate environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive change? This seminar brings together leading scholars to unfold the role of governance in transformation processes and outcomes

Across the globe, societies and environments are under enormous pressure due to climate change, as well as biodiversity loss and resource degradation. As these pressures continue to increase, there is widespread awareness that major system changes are needed to achieve sustainable, inclusive development within increasingly unstable environments.
This seminar foregrounds governance issues of system change through an expert dialogue between leading scholars Lisa Schipper, Andrea Nightingale, and Siri Eriksen, who have all made major contributions to scholarship on governance in relation to climate and environmental change and sustainable development.
To date, research and policy on transformation has focused to a greater extent on technical aspects of systemic challenges – from water management systems to new agricultural approaches. These are essential, but leave crucial aspects of major system change unaddressed – including underlying unsustainable or unequal development pathways as well as fundamentally differing visions for development.
To set the scene for this dialogue, we dive into the concrete challenges being faced on the ground in major agricultural systems in Vietnam. Agricultural systems in Vietnam and globally are in some instances reaching a breaking point, hard hit by climate change while driving emissions, biodiversity loss and resource degradation. At the same time, they are a bulwark of economies and rural livelihoods. Globally, billions are dependent on agricultural systems for well-being and survival.
This seminar addresses these challenges as part of the kick-off of the research program TRANS-AG: Governing Transformation in Agricultural Systems in Vietnam (2024-2028). TRANS-AG explores transformational change, or major system change, of agricultural systems in Vietnam in the face of climate and environmental challenges and development needs. We study how governance can facilitate change towards environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive futures.
