From the desk of the Director
Welcome to the official website of the Department of Climate Change.
This platform serves as an information hub on climate change initiatives and activities in the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Recognizing the severe consequences and impacts of climate change on our nation, Nigeria has joined the global community in adopting key treaties to combat climate change. Nigeria became a Party to the UNFCCC in 1992 and ratified the Convention in 1994. In 2004, Nigeria also became a Party to the Kyoto Protocol. More recently, Nigeria ratified the Paris Agreement in March 2017, which was approved by the UNFCCC on May 16, 2017, and came into force on June 15, 2017.
Due to the critical importance of climate change and the extensive activities required to implement these treaties, the Federal Government of Nigeria established the Department of Climate Change within the Federal Ministry of Environment. This department is dedicated to driving national climate action efforts and ensuring effective implementation of climate policies.
Climate change poses significant threats to Nigeria and its people, including the southward advancement of desertification and potential submergence of our Atlantic Ocean coastline. While some changes in climate are unavoidable due to past and future global emissions, we can mitigate the detrimental effects by reducing greenhouse gas emissions to acceptable levels.
Addressing climate change is a collective responsibility, working closely with relevant stakeholders, subnational governments, development partners, local and international communities to provide national policy direction for combating climate change and advancing low-carbon development.
Best regards.
