The Education Awareness and Outreach Division of the Department of Climate Change is one of the four Divisions within the Department. It was created as part of efforts to create awareness on the issues of Climate Change all across the country.

The Education, Awareness, and Outreach Division (EAO) within the Climate Change Department plays a pivotal role in addressing climate change. Aligned with the principles and objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), this division is committed to promoting environmental stewardship, resilience, and sustainable development through comprehensive education and awareness initiatives.

Mandate:

To ensure development and implementation of strategies on Education, Awareness and Outreach on Climate Change and its effects.

Functions:

Some of the key functions of the Division are:

• Public Awareness Campaigns: Develop and implement comprehensive public awareness campaigns to educate the general population about the causes, impacts, and solutions to climate change.
• School Programs: Integrate climate change education into school curricula at all levels, from primary to tertiary education, ensuring that students understand the science, effects, and mitigation strategies of climate change.
• Community Engagement: Engage with local communities through workshops, seminars, and town hall meetings to discuss climate change impacts and gather input on local adaptation and mitigation strategies.
• Training and Capacity Building: Provide training programs for government officials, educators, and community leaders to enhance their understanding and ability to address climate change issues effectively.
• Resource Development: Create and distribute educational materials, such as brochures, videos, and toolkits, to support climate change education and awareness efforts.
• Media Collaboration: Partner with media organizations to ensure accurate and widespread coverage of climate change issues, initiatives, and events.
• Behavioral Change Initiatives: Design and promote initiatives that encourage individuals and organizations to adopt sustainable practices and reduce their carbon footprint.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Facilitate ongoing dialogue and collaboration with key stakeholders, including businesses, NGOs, and academic institutions, to promote climate change awareness and action.
• Policy Advocacy: Advocate for and support the development and implementation of policies that promote climate change education and awareness at local, regional, and national levels.
• Monitoring and Evaluation: Establish mechanisms to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of education and awareness programs, using feedback to continuously improve strategies and outcomes.
The Division Coordinated:
• Establishment of the Climate Change Desk Offices in the 36 states and development of a Climate Change Toolkit for states
• Climate Governance Performance Ranking of the 36 states (FCT inclusive) of Nigeria in conjunction with Society for Planet and Prosperity.
• Establishment of the Climate Change Desk Offices in the 36 states and development of a Climate Change Toolkit for states
• Climate Governance Performance Ranking of the 36 states (FCT inclusive) of Nigeria in conjunction with Society for Planet and Prosperity.
• Placement of Billboards on climate change across the country to sensitize millions of Nigerians on issues of climate change among several other climate change awareness programmes.
