Nigeria Launches First Climate Governance Performance Ranking

In a groundbreaking initiative to promote climate action at the subnational level, the Federal Ministry of Environment has partnered with the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) to launch Nigeria’s first Climate Governance Performance Ranking.

This comprehensive ranking evaluates all 36 states of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on their efforts and achievements in climate governance. The primary objectives of this initiative are:

  • To recognize states that are leading the way in climate action
  • To encourage other states to take greater actions
  • To promote climate awareness at the subnational level

Top Performers

The inaugural ranking has revealed the following top performers:

  1. Lagos
  2. Gombe
  3. Ebonyi
  4. Ekiti and Borno (joint 4th place)

This ranking serves as a catalyst for positive change, inspiring healthy competition among states to improve their climate governance practices. It also provides valuable insights into successful strategies that can be shared and replicated across the nation.

We congratulate the top-performing states and encourage all states to continue their efforts in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.
